2- Course aims :-
  1. Introduce the basic information of petroleum and petrochemistry
  2. Study the composition, physical and chemical properties of petroleum products and petrochemicals
  3. Introduce the basic information of alicyclic and polynuclear compounds
  4. Introduce the principles of nomenclature of alicyclic compounds.
  5. Study the methods of preparation of major classes of alicyclic and polynuclear compounds
  6. Study the physical and chemical properties of major classes of alicyclic and polynuclear compounds.

1Petroleum and petrochemistry A general idea- importance, occurrence, and transportation- origin of petroleum- inorganic theory (carbide theory) organic theory- factors affecting transformation to petroleum.
2Composition of petroleum - hydrocarbon constituents (paraffins, aromatics, naphthenes) -non-hydrocarbon constituents (sulphur, nitrogen, oxygen, metallic compounds) - resinous materials.
3Specifications of petroleum and its products- classification of crude petroleum (according the chemical composition and the sulphur percentage).
