| - Study the preservation and occurrence of plant fossils.
- Acquire the students skills of the system of classification to fully understand relationships between living and fossil organisms.
- Introduce the principles of biostratigraphic study that led to the development of the relative geologic time scale and as an important tool in stratigraphic correlation.
- Outline the basic information of palaeoecology and palaeobiogeography.
- Use the principles of paleobotany as a tool for exploration for Earth resources, especially diatomites, iron ore formations of the Precambrian and hydrocarbons.
