| - The usage of appropriate terminology in order to identify flowering plants, as well as understanding the historical context and investigate procedures used by taxonomists in developing classifications (dicots and monocots).
- The evolutionary relationships of plants
- The systematic position, morphology, anatomy, ecology, evolution, development and life cycles of archegoniate plants through a comparative study of living and extinct specimens providing an insight into the simplicity and commonality that underline complex and diverse plants
- Internal structure of different tissues and cell forms of roots, stems and leaves
