1 - Zoology Department / Faculty of Science
  • B- Professional information :

     1- General program aims

1- Provide an education of the highest caliber across all science in order to produce graduates of the quality sought by industry, the profession and public service and to provide academic teachers and researchers for the future.
2- Provide a broad introduction to a range of sciences and scientific skills at university level, through having studied at least three experimental science subjects and mathematics to some extent.
3- Train our students to an analyze complex problems in different science subjects on basis of evidence and can communicate their conclusions to others.
4- Provide the foundations essential for further training and for development of skills and knowledge in our students future careers, whether in specific areas of biology or in another discipline or vocation.
5- Provide a deep –rooted knowledge of the fundamental principles of biology, chemistry and physical sciences, to develop an ability to apply these principles to specific problems in science.
6- Encourage acquisition of specific skills in experimental design procedures and analysis of experimental data.
7- Provide students with risk assessment, healthy and safely regulations for chemistry , physics with respect for animal and plant life .
    2- Intended learning outcomes (ILO'S)

     3- Academic standards

     4- Reference standards (Benchmarks)

1- These standards describe what students should know and be able to do by the end of four years of study. Moreover, these standards reflect the increasing complexity and sophistication that students are expected to achieve as they progress through the department. As described in table shown in the subsection 3b, our academic standards are completely compatible with the national academic reference nce standards (NARS). The QAA has already published a number of academic standards to make explicit the general academic characteristics and standards of honors degrees in EGYPT. These are quite detailed, and may be referenced from a program specification to avoid the re-statement of basic information about a subject area. In order to fulfill international standards for Biological science degree (zoology and chemistry)our students should acquire:
2- 1-Generic skills a- Knowledge and understanding a-1- knowledge and understanding of the processes and mechanism of life – from molecular to cellular and –from organism to community. a-2- engagement with essential facts, major concepts ,principles, theories associated with program curriculum including biology ,chemistry, physics,…etc. a-3- understanding of information and data, and their setting within theoretical framework. a-4-familliarity with terminology, nomenclature and classification system in different types of studied subjects. a-5- developing knowledge about diversity and evolution. a-6-the ability to read and use appropriate literature with a full and critical understanding. a-7-an appreciation of the complexity and diversity of life processes through the study of organisms, their molecular, cellular and physiological processes ,their genetic and their relationships between them and their environment.
3- 2- Key skills These skills should be developed in this degree are subdivided into: b- Intellectual skills b-1- analyzing and summarizing information b-2- applying subject knowledge and understanding to address problems in different types of science subjects. b-3-recongizing and applying subject-specific theories, concepts or principles. b-4- designing ,planning ,conducting and reporting on investigations, this may be individually or in group projects.
4- c- Practical skills c-1-understanding field and /or laboratory investigations of living systems in a responsible safe and ethical manner. c-2- obtaining, recording, collecting and analyzing data using appropriate techniques in the field and/or laboratory, working by themselves or in a group.
5- d- General and transferable skills d-1- the ability to think independent, set tasks and solve problems by using a variety of methods including the use of computers. d-2 using the internet and other electronic sources critically as a mean of communication and a source of information. d-3- preparing ,processing, interpreting and presenting data using appropriate qualitative and quantitative techniques (statistical programs, spreadsheets, seminars).
6- Benchmarks: Benchmarks are an important external source of reference for higher education. Then enable the learning outcome specified for a particular program to be reviewed and evaluated against agreed general expectation about standards. We have evaluated our program against Liverpool University, biological science program. This program provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding, qualities, skills and other attributes in the following area:
7- Knowledge and Understandi ng a. Knowledge and understanding of: 1- The molecular and cellular processes that control the function and development of living organisms and communities. 2- Interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to understanding biological systems and processes. 3- Terminology, nomenclature and classification of living organisms 4- Biological issues relating to the quality and sustainability of life. 5- Biodiversity, biogeography, conservation and the management of species. 6- How an understanding of biological systems can advance knowledge and solve problems in a wide range of disciplines. 7- Methods for acquiring, interpreting and analyzing biological information through the study of texts, original reports and data sets. 8- The relationship between molecular and cellular processes and evolutionary biology
8- b. Intellectual (thinking skills) Upon successful completion of the program Students will be able to: 1- Reason critically 2- Identify and solve problems 3- Analyze, evaluate and interpret 4- Formulate and test hypotheses 5- Demonstrate and exercise independence of mind and thought 6- Synthesize information and form a coherent understanding 7- Plan, conduct and report on a program of research 8- Recognize the moral, social and ethical issues of investigations and the need for ethical standards and professional codes of practice.
9- c. Practical skills Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to: 1- Plan and safely execute a series of experiments 2- Use laboratory equipment correctly and safely to generate data 3- Record and analyze experimental data, interpret their validity, apply statistical analyses and suggest further investigations 4- Take effective notes and record experimental procedures and laboratory protocols 5- Prepare scientific reports 6- Use the scientific literature correctly and effectively 7- Communicate scientific data and results, both orally and in writing 8- Undertake investigations in a responsible, safe and ethical manner, paying attention to risk assessment and safety regulations
10- d. transferable skills Upon successful completion of the program, , students will be able to: 1- Structure and communicate ideas effectively both orally and in writing using a range of formats 2- Manage time, work to deadlines and priorities workloads to achieve targets 3- Actively participate in groups but be capable of independent work 4- Access and evaluate information and use IT effectively 5- Assess the relevance and importance of ideas of others 6- Develop lifelong learning skills that are flexible and adaptable 7- Evaluate own performance and working standards and those of others
