2- Course aims :-
  1. Introduce the basic information of polymers.
  2. Introduce the basic information of dyes.
  3. Study the physical and chemical properties of major classes of polymers.
  4. Study the physical and chemical properties of different types of fibers.
  5. Study of different types of dyes.
  6. Study of different dying techniques.

1Polymer chemistry: • Introduction – polymerization of olefinic or cyclic monomers – growth polymerization – free radical vinyl polymerization and its kinetics and mechanism.
2• Chain transfer reactions – auto-inhibition – polymerization of dienes – copolymerization – ionic vinyl polymerization.
3• Anionic polymerization (mechanism, reactivity, stereochemistry, techniques).
4• Ring opening polymerization – molecular weight (number average molecular weight, distribution).
5• Chemical structure and properties – cross-linking – glass transition temp. – reactions of vinyl polymers – conformation – factors determining chain flexibility
6• Rubber (processing and vulcanization, elastomers, extenders, softeners, fillers, vulcanization agents, antioxidants, antiozonants).
7• Plastics (thermoplastics and thermosets, properties, processing).
8• Fibers (production of material and man-made-fibers, geometric characteristics, mechanical behaviour).
9Dyes and fibers: Color – photoelectric theory – complementary light.

11• Textile fibers – fiber structure – properties – identification – classification (cellulose, cotton flax, hemp jute-man-made cellulosic fibers, rayon acetate and triacetate protein, wool and silk mineral fibers) – man made fibers.
12• Processing of textiles (purification and preliminary singeing, desizing, scouring, bleaching and mercerizing dyeing) – kinds of forces by which dye molecules are bound to the fiber.
